Established in 2008, Friendly Structures is a husband and wife team with a commitment to creating quality design-build work. For us, the green process starts from the very beginning - with your site. We do our best to protect the natural ecosystem on your site as much as possible. We take a holistic approach to construction, focusing on the client at the center of inspiration no matter what the project; new home construction, custom home addition, custom home plan design, remodel, or renovation. Both being present at all phases of the build helps give your project a balance of many different (elements) that are always present in life and our surroundings.
-Meet Meredith-
Meredith Ozynska-Keith knew she wanted to become an architect at only six years old when she first heard about a house built on a river. The concept intrigued her so much that she drew home after home with the element of water as the main component. It was not until college that she finally got to see the house that served as a beacon of inspiration for so many years. It exceeded every expectation and continues to influence her work and life everyday.
Meredith has always had a strong connection with nature and passion for Earth’s’ greatest gifts. Her design work integrates nature with structure and becomes a conduit for connection to the land, the mind, body, and soul.
The design process is vitally important to the overall process. Through that process, I identify opportunities to solve solutions, and take advantage of needs that are addressed or that I discover
in the design process. These opportunities, or moments, transform spaces that are functional, and bring elements of creativity, or uniqueness derived from the surroundings, celebrate the inhabitants, and connect you with nature and each other.

-Meet Derick-
After school, Derick & Meredith moved away to pursue careers in the design-build field. Upon stating their family, they intentionally chose to move back to Blacksburg, Virginia and make it their permanent home. Derick Walters has deep roots in this community. He understands the local environment and dichotomy. He approaches each challenge from a principle of practicality, choosing cost and constructability to balance the integrity of the design without compromising quality of construction. His years of experience in building construction have made him capable of managing all components of any construction project. He has an approachable nature that makes communication easy and natural.
Derick can build a house from top to bottom. He has worked tirelessly over the years to build a construction team with a variety of skills and expertise. He values hard work, and is rewarded with great relationships with our subcontractors, the town officials, and the team that works for him.
